Why the Pineapple?
The Pineapple is the universally recognized signature of welcome, hospitality, graciousness, warmth and conviviality.
Christopher Columbus brought the pineapple back to Europe in 1493 after his travels through the Caribbean. Its popularity spread from Europe to the American colonies. The colonies were usually rural, and the main source of entertainment and the transference of news and information was visiting each others homes. The concept of hospitality –welcoming guests and friends into one’s home was an integral part of everyday society.
Hostesses would try to outdo each other in their elaborate presentation and preparation of the pineapple. Guests were so grateful and appreciative of the hostesses efforts to spare no expense in their dining pleasure that the pineapple became the symbol of welcome and good cheer.
Another tale of how the pineapple came to be such a symbol of hospitality and welcome says that when the colonial sea captains would return from being at sea, they would display a pineapple at their door or upon their gates as a sign that they were home and welcoming friends for food, drink and good company.
