Charlotte
Charlotte is known as the Queen City in honor of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, wife of King George III of England. Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and the 21st largest city in the United States. It is home of over 10 Fortune 100 companies including Bank of America, Lowe's, and Wachovia. Charlotte is the largest trading center in the southeast and second largest financial center in the United States. In a survey conducted in ’03 by Crannium Inc., Charlotte was ranked the 29th "most fun city" due to its number of sports teams, restaurants, cultural activities, and outdoor activities. Charlotte has also been a past winner of the coveted "All America City Award", handed out by the National Civic League.
Charlotte was founded at the intersection of two Native American trading paths toward the beginning of the 18th century. The first house in Charlotte was built in 1755 by Thomas Polk even though there was not even a town in place yet. In time a town did develop around these thriving trading routes. Here are some other interesting historical facts:
- Gold was discovered in 1799 and the Reed Gold Mine was established as the first gold mine in the United States. Operation stopped in 1912.
- In 1837, the United States Congress established a mint to produce coins from the gold found in Charlotte. The Mint was used by the Confederacy during the Civil War.
- North Carolina seceded from the Union and joined the Confederacy on May 20, 1861.
Charlotte has a dynamic and thriving local economy, yet its people are nice, warm, and friendly. Charlotte also has the perfect location since it is only 2 hours to the mountains and about 3 hours to the beach. Combine all of that with its incredible climate and dynamic choices of activities and it is easy to see why Charlotte is one of the most attractive cities in the United States. Charlotte’s quality of life for its residents is second to none.
