Lake Wylie

Lake Wylie is a beautiful 1300 acre lake just southwest of Charlotte. It actually straddles the North Carolina/South Carolina line along the Catawba River. Lake Wylie is one of eleven lakes in the Catawba River system run by Duke Power. This man-made lake was originally built in 1904 and was originally called “Catawba Lake”. It remained named “Catawba Lake” until 1960 when it was name Lake Wylie after Dr. Gill Wylie who was a business associate of Duke Power founder Buck Duke. It is dammed to the north by the Mountain Island Dam and dammed to the south by the Wylie Dam. The closest lake to Lake Wylie on this Catawba system is Lake Norman which is just north of Charlotte. There are 325 miles of shoreline on Lake Wylie which is divided into North and South Carolina.

Lake Wylie has become a sought after recreational area. Typical lake activities include: boating, fishing, waterskiing, bird watching, and many more. Along with those lake activities, the Lake Wylie area offers many off the water activities such as golfing, tennis, hiking, biking, and even bird watching. Fishing is probably the number one favorite activity on Lake Wylie. There have been many bass tournaments run on this river fed lake. Along with bass, you’ll also catch catfish and crappie.

McDowell Nature Preserve is a water front park that offers camping, hiking, biking, boat rental, a picnic area and a playground. Your family will be completely entertained and won’t want to leave McDowell Nature Preserve. Another exceptional attraction on Lake Wylie is the 4th of July fireworks display near the Buster Boyd Bridge. The best seat in the house to watch the fireworks is in your boat anchored in the middle of the lake. Also in the Buster Boyd Bridge area is T-Bones restaurant. It is the most popular lake gathering spot after spending a fun-filled day on the water.

There are many exciting new and established neighborhoods and developments around Lake Wylie. Housing prices range from $1ook to multi-million, waterfront homes. Some popular new neighborhoods in the Lake Wylie area include: The Palisades, and The Vineyards on Lake Wylie. These areas offer every home and amenity choice that you and your family could possibly think of. Many of these homes have been remodeled or upgraded to match their beautiful views of the lake.
