Matthews
Matthews is southern suburb of Charlotte in the Metrolina area. Towns in the Metrolina area make up the
fifth largest urban area in the country. Matthews began its humble beginnings in the 1800’s. It was known as Stumptown because of the remains of the forests in the area before it was fully settled. The name was eventually changed to Fullwood in honor of Mr. John Fullwood who was a businessman and the first postmaster. In the 1870’s, Mr. Watson Matthews directed the construction of the railroad through Matthews which connected Wilmington to Tennessee. The town name was changed to Matthews in his honor. Matthews began to flourish as cotton farming became prominent around the turn of the century.
Today, Matthews is part of Mecklenburg county and is about 10 miles south of uptown Charlotte. Matthews spreads over about 17 square miles of natural beauty with neighborhoods, outstanding schools, and a charming downtown.
