Tega Cay

Tega Cay is a close knit recreational community located on a peninsula in Lake Wylie. Although Tega Cay is located in South Carolina, is it a surprisingly close and easy commute to Charlotte which is only approximately 20 miles away.

Tega Cay is a three square mile city that is heavily wooded and dense, but offers 13 miles of shoreline to enjoy. The city’s slogan is "The Good Life", and the name Tega Cay is Polynesian for "Beautiful Peninsula".

Tega Cay's history only dates back to 1970 when the Errin Company broke ground on the 1,600 wooded acres of land on Lake Wylie with the intent of creating a beautiful community. The roads and amenities were built first lake fireplacewith a large clubhouse, pools, tennis courts and a golf course. Home construction began next and Tega Cay became a gated community. In the early days homeowners would drive up to the front gate to collect their mail and meet the school buses.

A Property Owner's Association (POA) was quickly formed to protect the rights of individual residents and the property owners themselves as a whole. The POA was integral in protecting those rights in 1982 when the current developers filed for bankruptcy. Tega Cay officially became a city to ensure the rights and interests of the residents and to guide the community into the future. Over the years, Tega Cay has grown gracefully with the formation of the Police Department in 1983 and in 1984 the first city office was moved out of the clubhouse and a New City Hall was dedicated.

In 2000 the city annexed three new areas including Stonecrest, Nivens Creek Landing and Crescent. Stonecrest brought the retail and commercial components, Crescent consists of townhomes, and Nivens Creek Landing , which is owned by Duke Power, serves as a boat ramp for residents.

Estimates predict that the city will double its size by 2010. The census for 2000 showed about 4040 residents. Great things await this "Beautiful Peninsula'" current residents and the newcomers who are looking for "The Good Life" with offerings of golf, tennis, boating, marinas, playgrounds, waterfront parks, and beaches. Who could resist?
